Plastic is beginning to outnumber life in certain areas, and is entering the food chain of other marine life, which is rather frightening. We really need to think about reducing our use of plastic, and disposing of what we do use properly, recycling as much as possible.”  Beaumont commented “we see a variety of garbage when we’re out kayaking, mostly its plastic.  It washes up on the islands – where at least we can collect it, however, it still ends up at the dump.”  Downunder Kayaking actively supports environmental causes through the educational element of their children’s programs and guided outings.  In addition to inviting advocates such as Ms Schaller to lead paddles and share first-hand knowledge, they volunteer with Harborwatch to learn about the impact of pollutants on the marine life.  Harborwatch is a water quality monitoring effort that is actively engaged in the scientific monitoring of local estuaries and watersheds in lower Fairfield County.  “In a recent outing with Dick Harris, Director of Harbor/River Watch, we learnt that the oxygen levels on the floor of the Norwalk River are such that bottom dwellers can't survive.  This is primarily caused by pollutants.  We tell paddlers ‘what goes on the ground goes in the sound’, and are involved in the storm drain stenciling project designed by Save the Sound” added Beaumont.     HARBORWATCH We've been tagging along with Dick Harris, Director of Harbor/River Watch, to find out what IS actually going on in the local waterways.  And you won't be pleased - the oxygen levels on the floor of the Norwalk River are such that bottom dwellers can't survive.  What causes this?  Man-made pollutants.  Keep in mind this mantra - what goes on the ground goes in the sound.  We may not be able to control local industries, we can certainly be aware and responsible for ourselves.  Dick Harris (blue) and Harborwatch volunteers. Sunset Paddling with a guide rentals + $15pp, $10 more than 4.Experience the river and Long Island Sound bathed in the glow of sunset - best time to take pictures!      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Give it a Go!" ...that's the motto at Downunder, and they do - 3 year olds through grandparents get out on the water, with experience or not, swimmers or not, even dogs go out!  Kayaking on a sit on top is easy, safe and fun - our job is to make it so and we do our job, really well.  No worries mate, we'll take care of you!         At Downunder you'll enjoy a beautiful river with several inlets, a small waterfall, bridges, docks and pilings to meander between and around.  Explore the bays and coves of Long Island Sound.  Wildlife sanctuaries such as Farm Creek and the Fish Islands.  Comb beaches, swim, enjoy the wildlife - oyster catchers, osprey, cormorants, herons and egrets.        Located at ‘Below Deck’ a cabana-like store full of fun summer gear - swimsuits, sandals, hats, gift. Services include: sit on top kayak rentals, instruction, guiding, children’s summer programs, parties, catered events (through the Rowayton Market - upstairs) from simple to gourmet, island rentals, corporate events.  Visit us for a mini vacation!    WEEKLY NEWS - SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER - IT'S FUNNY, BRIEF, AND FULL OF INTERESTING STUFF.  Just click on this LINK, and enter 'newsletter' in the subject.  ].
