THANKS TO ALL MY FRIENDS, CLIENTS AND COLLEAGUES
Kayak for A Cause was created as a way to blend love of the sport with committment to helping good causes. Each year, kayakers join together to cross Long Island Sound and raise money for carefully considered charities, most of which work to protect our local waters, environment and community. In addition to being a paddler for the Cause, I'm the Safety Director, and provide training to participants - we're always looking for new paddlers, sign up for KFAC XI! We also always need people with boats to act as escorts on the day - there are 25 pods of 12 paddlers, we'd like 25 boats. Keep July 23, 2011 free!
To sign up, volunteer, or donate go to www.kfac.com.
Still want to donate? This link I believe take you direct to 'sponsor a participant'. Enter Kim Beaumont, or general donation.

Safety Certification
To participate in KFAC you need to be a proficient paddler, know how to wear a sprayskirt, how to capsize and get out of it, how to self rescue and assist others with rescues.
KFAC offers two clinics (Norwalk June 6th, Long Island June 26th) where you can learn how to do all these, although you should already have paddling skills. Cost $50. Proof such as a certificate (even an email) from a certified instructor (ACA/BCU) is required before you can paddle. This is to be provided to the Safety Director. Register for the clinics at KFAC.com. Boats are included.
Only past paddlers are exempt. A list of Instructors/Third Party Trainers is below.
There are a limited number of KFAC boats available for paddler use at the clinics. You must pre-register to get one.
Pod Leaders have a separate clinic, which is mandatory unless you have led a Pod before. Sunday June 13th 8:30pm-1pm, departs public boat launch. One free spot, additional spots $50 - recommended for co-leader.
POD TRAINING: Several KFAC Instructors are on call to train you privately or as a pod. Consider hiring a guide/instructor to just get out there with you, and establish some pod management.
KFAC INSTRUCTION: All paddlers have to be at the ACA Intro to Kayaking level of instruction AND have experience capsizing from a kayak whilst wearing a sprayskirt as well as self and assisted rescues. A calendar of scheduled classes is on the left. A class is available via KFAC on Sunday June 6th - for those that have pre-registered. Space is limited, and there is a subsidized fee of $50. If you didn't preregister, email to check on availability. Another one is being held on Long Island on Saturday June 26th.
TRAINING RECOMMENDATIONS
The course is approximately 13 miles. In addition to skills and experience, paddlers need to be fit, flexible, hydrated, and rested.
Fit paddlers have staying power, paddle at an even and consistent pace, and don’t crap out.
